FARMERS SMILE WHEN THE EARTH CRIES By Ogunyomi Israel Abidemi

Written by Bada Yusuf Amoo

At fall when farmers slam

Earth’s heart ajar, bury in it

Seeds of last harvest,

The earth groans subtly, mending

The bones the farmers cracked;

Birds of the field fly idly, laughing

Ludicrously as farmers toil.

At harvest when farmers

Tear the chest of the earth asunder,

Smiles of satisfaction keep

Their faces aglow:

Blood of the injured earth fattens

The farmers’ robust harvest.

The watching sky keeps

His staring eyes unblinking,

While songs of the idle birds

Console the sobbing earth,

Waiting sadly again to bear

The injuries coming

With the coming rain.
